MONKEY SCREAMS, a new volume of poetry by Robert Joe Stout (Excerpt)

As though a drowning swimmer

caught by windswept swells the face

on the computer screen dissolves.

For a moment, frowning, he peers

at the opaque, caught in a recurrent

dream: About to step into a brightly lit

and festive place the scene turns gray

but he keeps walking towards he knows

not what. Write another critical account…

revise old poetry… Despite two marriages,

five healthy and ambitious kids, shelves

of books and monographs, some that he’s written,

others gifted, borrowed, bought,

he’s where he’s been for sixty years

trying to penetrate that fog, put into words

dissolving shapes that lead the way

to something precious, something that he’s lost.
